What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Give up?

It’s a truck registered to the Hoboken Parking Utility (see the HPU on the side of the door)…

…Illegally parked in a “No Parking Zone” marked by the yellow paint on the curb.

Someone should give them a ticket. Oh wait…

What else is new. Besides parking illegall, he or she probabbly is using the vehicle for private use.

If anyone has ever gotten a ticket for double parking you can always double park in front of a few Old Time stores in town where the customers are never ticketed……. Usually one can pick them out by ethnicity! Special dispensation??? Or how about parking on the sidewalk….. Ive been in court and seeing many people for that offense…… Check out the Municipal Parking Garage….. On any day you can see more than 10 cars parked on the sidewalk. One of the cars has been parked there and hasnt moved since I moved here in 1987 and was most likely there years before that. Think it belongs to someone who knows someone??? Let me see…. say the ticket for parking on the sidewalk is $50,00. At one ticket a day times 20 years, times 356 days a year……….. Thats over $350,000.00 that is due the city. I could go on forever.

Hey that’s ok. A friend of mine used to work for DSNY - that’s Department of Sanitation, New York - and he used to take the DSNY car to check up on his drivers (the actual garbagemen) but would instead park it in an alley and sleep for about an hour or two. He would also drive on the sidewalk and park in “no park zones.”

My friend is now retired but this kind of behavior still exists. It’s funny to talk about it, but it’s sad when you see it actually happen.

This is an HPU vehicle, and here’s what I recently learned about HPU head John Corea:

After reading the Jersey Journal article describing how the Hoboken Parking Utility Director tried to expense a $1,735.67 meal to the city taxpayers (see below - Jersey Journal 1/31/07), I decided to google John Corea, and here’s what I found:

    1) Corea was hired to the HPU in Feb 2004 at a salary of $24,500 during a city hiring freeze (see below - Hoboken Reporter 2/22/04). The city was in uproar because A) Corea was hired without city council approval and B) Corea had a shady past that included an investigation from the New York Stock Exchange in the 1990’s that found Corea guilty of improper trading, and, “censured and permanently barred from trading again on the NYSE” (see below - Hoboken Reporter 5/16/04)

    2) As the head of the HPU, Corea has increased the cost of parking fines and increased the cost of parking permits. However the parking situation in the garage at 916 Garden Street has spiraled out of control. Here’s what I found on Hoboken411.com (see below):

    A) Cadillac Deville destroyed by garage (2/2004)
    B) Jeep destroyed by garage (10/2005)
    C) Chrysler damaged by garage (11/2005)
    D) Garage closes, stop-work orders, mechanical failures, long lines, etc. etc. etc.

Then I read that Corea replaced Robitics with Unitronics as the company to run the garage. This action gets the courts involved and is leading towards a settlement that will cost the city millions in contract costs and financial settlements.

To make matters worse, I also saw Hoboken got a black eye when our robotic garage appeared on CNN Money’s article, “101 Dumbest Moments in Business” (See below - CNN Money 1/23/07).

Edmecka.com has an article that describes a stripper coming in to the HPU Office in city hall to give an employee a “birthday-gram”. Is this true? Was Corea there?

Finally, the cherry on top of it all, John Corea no longer makes the $24,500 that he started with, but his salary is allegedly in the neighborhood of $90,000. Is that true too?

Why does Corea work for the city? Why does everyone cover for him? What exactly did he eat for $1,735.67? Please explain this to me.

Wow! Way to go on the research! I’m speechless at all of those reports. Although, I did see the CNN thing about the worst business blunders; this isn’t the first time we were noticed for that missmanagement. See my slashdot post.

Thanks for showing me all those links. Truly scary when you think about how this city is run.
