On my way to work this morning, I stepped in dog shit - again.
It has to be the third time this year that I did that. I guess I wasn’t paying attention to the ground and walked right into it. But its hard to avoid the crap that’s left on the sidewalks in this town - its everywhere. I don’t have a problem with the dogs - every living thing has to go somehow and sometime - but their owners are completely out of control!
Their laziness or aversion to scooping the poop is making turning the town into a disease ridden toilet for the four-legged. Its not like its hard to curb a dog; I’ve never done it myself but it appears really easy. All I think you need to do is carry a bag with you while you walk your dog and pick up the doo with it once the dog is done with its business; then throw away the crap in trash bin when done walking Fido. The rudeness of not picking up after one’s dog is enough to drive me nuts but its what the feces carries in the way of germs and disease that bothers me; it makes me more upset thinking about who might come in contact with the leftovers.
The first thing that comes to mind are other dogs. Just because they are animals, doesn’t mean that they like or want to roll around in their own filth. The dog I had as a child went in one area of our yard and stayed away from it when he didn’t need to be in the “bathroom”. Furthermore, dogs themselves can get very sick from parasites and viruses that spread through contact and proximity to dog stool. I wouldn’t want my dog walking around in other dogs’ crap for fear they might get sick. Maybe dog owners in this town don’t care about their dogs as much as one might hope they do.
Regardless of whether you are a dog owner or not, I think most agree that humans shouldn’t be in contact with feces of any kind either. But that’s what every dog owner risks when they don’t clean up after Rex. I was able to scrape off most of the crap I collected from my leap into the dog loo that has become my town. But what happens if a small child comes into contact with that shit!?!? If someone’s child got sick from an uncurbed dog in this town, there would be hell to pay.
So what do we do about the doo? Well, I think we should ask that city hall clean up the sidewalks. Use the street cleaners or hire a commercial dog feces remover (yes, such services exist) - I don’t care. One other thing to do is fine the dog walkers and owners who don’t comply with the sanitation code. I’m sure the laws already support that idea but I don’t think that they are being enforced. If they were, the dog owners wouldn’t be letting their dogs shit all over town.
I completely agree with you. Willow Avenue is especially treacherous. It’s like a landmine! Maybe if the fine was more than like $25 people would take it more seriously.
you are absolutely correct! something needs to be done. and my solution is to completely HUMILIATE the people who are guilty. set up a section of your site where people can post photos of people caught not picking up after their dog. we all have cameras in our phones. of course, this needs to be supplemented by the stiffer fines as well (as most of the people who do this probably do it at night and/or check before they simply leave shit on the sidewalk).
Fifth street is a popular route to the park as you walk between Washington and Hudson the smell of dog shit overcomes you. Even if they pick it up the residue is still there. Solution dog licenses $1,000.00 per year and any one caught leaving any residue has to go to court will be fined and do community service to clean up dog shit. This will pay for some of the clean up. Dog owners will think twice about keeping them and others will not get them.
